Issues with POWERPOINT Format itself:
- File can be very large, so all users are disadvantaged even before they can determine whether they can use the file
- You need POWERPOINT or a viewer to open the file
- Not all screen readers can read POWERPOINT files
It is fine to post the original POWERPOINT file on the web, but provide an accessible HTML alternative.
Issues with HTML Output from POWERPOINT:
Saving POWERPOINT as HTML in POWERPOINT produces a frames-based, javascript-driven slide show built with non-standard HTML. This output is an issue:
- For those who do not have javascript enabled in the browser
- For those on older or newer devices which may not render the code appropriately
- For those who have not enabled frame support in their browser
- If the original slides did not have unique titles, or any titles at all, since slide titles are used to create the links in the navigation menu
- Other issues will depend on the content of the original file:
- Images with no alt text, which can be provided in POWERPOINT
- Insufficient contrast of text with the slide background
- Language may not be clear or sufficient to convey a message by itself, since POWERPOINT is primarily a presentation aid
