Previous to his career in tertiary education, William worked for four years in the Durban office of the largest public accounting practice in South Africa. As a professional assistant in a large auditing firm, he was responsible for large audits. His next position was that of group accountant for a diversified company operating in shipping, concrete pipe manufacturing, engineering, and farming. These six years provided important insights into the business world. His first academic post was in financial accounting, and since 1980 he has specialised in management accounting. For many years he was responsibilities included the work of the management accounting group in the organisations concerned. In 2004 he was awarded Honorary membership of the Southern African Accounting Association in recognition of his contribution to accounting education in Southern Africa. In 1998 he earned a teaching award, jointly with a colleague for innovative teaching on a management accounting course.
My current research focuses on management accounting issues, including their relationship to strategy, in manufacturing, service and public sector organisations:
