Assoc/Prof Wilson also supervises postgraduate students (MSc and PhD) in various project areas relating to Plant Pathology.
Assoc/Prof Wilson has published over 100 journal publications and seven book chapters with numerous conference papers, and industry reports.

Assoc/Prof Wilson gained his PhD from University of Western Australia in 1992. He was then employed as a Plant Pathologist at Department of Primary Industry and Fisheries, Tasmania (1992-1994) and appointed as a Lecturer within the School of Agricultural Science, UTas (1994-present).
Assoc/Prof Wilson has won more than 50 individual research grants worth more than $12M, including 11 grants from the ARC
Finalist: AUSVEG “Researcher of the Year” (2011 & 2012); Runner-up: UniQuest Trailblazer competition (2011); Winner: UTAS Business Competition (2008); Finalist: ©-STAR awards for commercialisation of science technology and research (2008); Teaching merit certificate (2004); Business/Higher Education Round Table (B-HERT) Honourable Mention Award for Outstanding Achievement in Collaborative R&D (2001); Listed in "Top 200 Young Achievers in Agriculture" by the Australian Farm Journal. (1998); Canterbury and Westland Science Fair (first prizes in Agriculture and Environment categories(1982).
Research leader – Vegetable Centre (2009 - present); Group Research Leader - Perennial Horticulture (1998 – 2008); Member of the UTas Institutional Biosafety Committee; Various Ad hoc roles (IRGS grant review panel; School executive committee, TIAR executive committee, international student liaison officer, School publication academic co-ordinator).
Editor of “Plant Pathology”(2004 – present); Senior Editor of “Australasian Plant Pathology” (2006 - 2011); Editor of “Plant Pathology Journal” (2005). Involvement in industry committees and strategic and operational planning. Active member of several professional societies including holding the following offices: Vice President (Australasian Plant Pathology Society (2009 - 2011); Regional Councillor (Australasian Plant Pathology Society (1995 – 1998); Plant Disease Loss Committee (American Phytopathological Society (2003 - 2005). Advisory role to State Government GMO experts group; State government Institutional biosafety committee; Advisor to Government on Biosecurity policy, member of team drafting State Biosecurity Strategy; Signatory for TASAG-ELISA Pathogen Testing Service.
Assoc/Prof Wilson’s research groups interest are quite diverse with work across a range of plant pathogens and crops with on-going studies of viral, bacterial, fungal and protozoan diseases. Research areas focus on three major (and related) themes:
