Following the Campus master planning exercise completed during 2006/2007, the University has seen a need to articulate its positioning in the central business district precincts of Hobart and Launceston to ensure that we effectively engage with communities and have a logical development of the built infrastructure in these locations over time. We occupy major facilities within these locations including the Centre for the Arts, the Clinical School, the Menzies Research Institute, the Conservatorium of Music, a number of leased spaces housing the Schools of Nursing and Rural Health, and the Schools of Visual and Performing Arts, Architecture and Design and Fine Furniture at Inveresk. Much of the development will be opportunistic in nature, and will need to be aware of other developments by both Government and private proponents. The Hobart Railyards is a good example.
A draft UTAS City Planning Guide has been developed by Asset Management Services and Lyons with oversight by the University’s Built Environment Committee (BEC). Feedback on the draft Guide was invited with a closing date of 30 October 2008.
The feedback received is now being considered and the Guide will be updated accordingly. It is envisaged that the Guide will be approved at the December UTAS Council Meeting.
Further information on this initiative is available from Matt Smith, Director Asset Management on 6226 2796.
