Security Services

As part of its concern for your personal security, the University of Tasmanian urges awareness of potential dangers on campus. You can help make the campus safe for everyone by:

  • Recognising risk and taking steps to avoid potential hazardous situations.
  • Making use of the University’s Security Service and by reporting any suspicious activities to Security.

The University provides a 24 hour Security Service, 365 days of the year provided by trained Security Staff. The University Security Service operates a Control Room on both the Sandy Bay and Newnham Campus.

The activities of the Security Patrol Staff includes :

  • Provide a security presence during peak hours
  • Daily unlocking and locking of buildings/rooms on campus
  • Conduct patrols of the campuses during the day and night
  • Respond immediately to emergency calls
  • Provide escorts in specific instances of concern, both physical and via the Safer Walk routes
  • Monitor parking on the Southern campuses and issue infringement notices as required (this task is undertaken by the Parking Officer on the Northern Campus)

The Control Room operations includes :

  • Act as Emergency Response Officer/Communications Officer in accordance with the University's Emergency Management Program
  • Organise programming of security doors as requested
  • Activate Access Cards as requested
  • Monitor CCTV security cameras on campus
  • Monitor security alarms on campus
  • Monitor the "Safer Walk" on the Sandy Bay and Newnham Campuses
  • Monitor and respond to emergency calls from Help Points
  • Remote unlocking and locking of buildings/rooms on campus
  • Recording details of lost and found items on Campus
