Space Planning and Management

The discipline of space planning is intended to assist faculties and divisions to ensure that the spatial assets available to them meet their strategic needs. Space planning issues are managed in close consultation with all relevant stakeholders.

Space related data is managed in Archibus, a proprietary information system that links CAD building plans to a database. Reports relating to space allocations and space use can be found in the MIRU Warehouse. They are updated from Archibus on a weekly basis.

Space Management Policies

A comprehensive Space Management Policy is currently under consideration. It was developed to assist faculties and divisions to actively manage their space in a way that ensures equity across the whole University. Other space management policies have been developed to address specific usage issues. These are contained within the AMS policies page.

Requests for Additional Space

Schools or sections needing additional space should alert their Dean or Division head to the need. If the space cannot be provided from within the Faculty/Divisional allocation a request for additional space can be submitted. Information required to support the request is identified in the Project Submission template.

The space needs of new courses/units or proposed research projects need to be considered during the initial planning process. If sufficient space is not available a solution to the impending space problem should be identified before the research proposal is submitted or the new course/unit is approved.

Utilisation surveys

Utilisation surveys are undertaken to provide the data on space use that is required for planning purposes.
