Kristen commenced her Bachelor of Agriculture in 2013. The recipient of the 2013 Annual Appeal Scholarship, Kristen is the first in her family to attend university. Kristen worked in office administration for six years but wasn’t being challenged and knew that life could offer more. She travelled to Canada and six months turned into three years working with horses and ranching.
“When I came back to Australia I worked in agriculture but soon recognised that although I had a diversity of skills none led me to challenging work that stretched me. I knew I needed a qualification, and I’m a big believer in opportunity and putting yourself out there so I enrolled at UTAS and applied for the scholarship. I am extremely passionate about the land, and the animals and plants on it, and know that good management of these resources can achieve so much for our community. It has taken twelve years but I really feel I’ve finally found my niche!”
Jade commenced her study in the Bachelor of Science majoring in Zoology at UTAS in 2009. In her first year of study, Jade was awarded the Lois and Alan Dann Scholarship in Science. Jade was also the recipient of the Konica Minolta International Exchange which took her to the University of Texas, USA.
“While I was in America I trained with some of the world’s best animal trainers – it was a phenomenal opportunity. I trained sheep and goats at Disney Animal Kingdom and trained chickens with the FBI. After five years as a zookeeper, I moved to Tasmania to enrol in UTAS’ zoology program as I wanted to specialise in animal behaviour, and the UTAS course offered the best opportunities in Australia for working out in the field with a diverse range of species. My fieldwork experience combined with my studies in the US have paid off as I'm back in Hobart and now run my own business in animal behaviour.”
Joshua is in his final year of a Bachelor of Business and Bachelor of Laws, majoring in finance. In 2012 Joshua received the Federation Scholarship in Law and the inaugural Global Resource Solutions Scholarship in Business. In the same year Joshua spent his second semester at the University of Ottawa where he studied International Investment Law.
“This experience opened my eyes to the world. It took me out of my comfort zone and challenged my thinking which had been limited to looking at life from an Australian’s perspective. I really cannot quantify this opportunity to look at Australia’s issues from the ‘outside’. It has enabled me to build professional relationships that will further my future prospects. This fantastic exchange has bolstered my confidence to pursue my ambitions of a career in global transactional banking.”
Aaron commenced his study in the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws in 2010. In 2013 Aaron was awarded the Order of Australia Foundation Association Scholarship. Aaron is majoring in Political Science and International Relations and was thrilled to be selected as the Australian delegate to UN Youth Australia's tour of the United States, and to be part of Australia's delegation to the Harvard National Model UN in Boston in 2013.
“My overseas experience was absolutely life-changing and one that words can't quite sum up. It was such an honour and privilege to participate in this adventure. I toured the White House, and met with UNESCO and The World Bank. All this was made possible with the support provided through a UTAS sponsorship. It has motivated me to pursue subject units such as American Politics, International Security and International Law. My study experience at UTAS is certainly inspiring me to think globally.”
Ellen commenced her Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws in 2009, majoring in Journalism and Media. In 2012 Ellen studied International Law at the City University of Hong Kong where she lived in a tiny twin room on campus and attended classes with inspiring people from all over the world.
“I learnt about a different culture and a whole different attitude to life through my overseas exchange and it has resulted in some of my best life experiences. I was inspired by the local students, who are extremely disciplined and driven. UTAS is a far-reaching institution and I have come to realise you never really leave its community. I attended a UTAS alumni dinner in Hong Kong and met 35 UTAS graduates. I was inspired to be amongst so many UTAS graduates who are broadening their horizons and experiencing the world.”
