This cluster of research activities is based on the development of teaching practice in both conventional studio-based environments and 'live' projects, where students are situated between the academic institution and a real community. Research in this area includes 'design as research', creative works, and innovations in design studio teaching. The research is largely undertaken by staff and postgraduate students, however some of the research may also be associated with the undergraduate courses.
Design as research includes projects undertaken by students in collaboration with professional bodies (for example Hobart City Council and Launceston City Council), non-profit organisations (for example Youth Futures Inc. and Gumatj community) and the Launcestion Assistance & Research Centre (LARC).
Creative works include specialisations in exhibitions, performance, new approaches to furniture and interiors, remote area micro-housing and prefabrication.
Innovations in design studio teaching include design and technology education (assessment strategies and teamwork), ‘learning-by-making’, and experiential learning.
