The Tasmanian School of Art has one of the most enviable positions of any art school in the world. Located on Hobart’s waterfront in the burgeoning creative and cultural precinct, the art school is an inspirational place to study.
"Studying at the School of Art has been and continues to be, an absolute buzz! The School acts as an incubator for creativity, where thinking outside the square is the rule rather than the exception”.
Neil Holmstrom, Art and Design Theory
“Life in art school is an exciting and enriching journey for me. I learn, explore and play under the inspiration of living artists as my lecturers. I enjoy the learning and making process and it has made a great difference in me.”
Karin Chan (International student) Honours
"At art school I have found myself immersed in a whole new world, full of camaraderie, collaboration and support. I never expected to feel so inspired."
Nicole Hutchins first year
“Life at the School of Art is the ultimate lifestyle. It is a sure way of knowing that you are truly alive, short of maybe sticking a fork in a power socket (please don't try this at home!). There is nowhere else on earth where you can indulge your creative senses with the freedom and focus of being surrounded by a community of people who are also in the unique and amazing business of cultivating ideas. At the TSA I have the advantage of having access to expensive equipment, expert minds and opportunity unlike anywhere else.”
Rahni Allan, Sculpture
“When I enrolled in an Undergraduate Degree at the Tasmanian School of Art, my original motivation was to 'pin myself down' to a three year course where I would do nothing but think about art, make art and make more art. As a mature age student, it was a way of giving myself time out from the 9 to 5, and its been a real luxury to indulge most of my waking life these past few years in the pursuit and study of visual art. What I wasn't expecting was the demanding rigor of ongoing explanations of the rationales behind my work to peers, which has enriched the experience immensely. I thought I would major in painting - oil painting to be specific - but have followed a path that I never envisaged at the outset, and my practice has expanded to include screen printing, sculpture and of course the ability to be self critical and write about art in general. The Tasmanian School of Art has offered me many possibilities for visual expression, across the widest range of media, and the facilities workshops and large studios helped me realise any project I had in mind. The work I have been able to produce is unlike anything I could or would make at home, and the community of friends I've made will be something I will treasure long after the degree is over. If you are thinking about enrolling and like me, wondered how you will get through three years of study... the simple advice I can give is DO IT. You won't regret it, it will change your life for the better like it has done mine, and will be over before you know it.”
