The Tasmanian School of Art is housed in the Centre for the Arts at Hunter Street, Hobart. We are located at the Eastern end of Hunter Street, opposite Macquarie Wharf Number 1 Shed. Hunter Street is at the Northern end of Hobart’s Franklin Wharf.
It was here on tiny Hunter Island and the adjacent land of Sullivan's Cove that the first settlement of Hobart Town was established over two hundred years ago. From the late 19th century the Jones & Co. IXL jam factory occupied the site and in the early 1980s the old factory and warehouses were purpose-designed and redeveloped to house the school's various studios and workshops.
Built into the redevelopment are artist-in-residence flats and studios, a first-rate gallery and lecture theatre - both used extensively by the public. Students have access to in-house working galleries and studios in addition to facilities that include digital production labs, sculpture, furniture and printmaking workshops, photographic darkrooms, a specialist art supply shop and an outstanding on campus library. Housed in purpose-built facilities and situated on Hobart’s spectacular waterfront, students have easy access to general ‘capital city’ amenities, the Tasmanian Museum & Art Gallery, the Salamanca Arts Centre and MONA (the Museum of Old and New Art). The ‘on site’ Plimsoll and Entrepôt Galleries regularly present challenging contemporary exhibitions that engage the broader community and support our diverse teaching programs. The Art Forum program hosts weekly public presentations from visiting international scholars and practitioners.
Approximately 500 students use the Tasmanian School of Art's purpose-built facilities that are widely acknowledged as being amongst the best in the world.
The Centre for the Arts is close to Hobart's main business district and in the midst of wharf areas where large liners and container ships dock. Hobart's fishing fleet is often anchored in the adjacent Fisherman's Wharf and Constitution and Victoria Docks.
Nearby Salamanca Place is a recognized centre for eating, entertainment and other social activities including a thriving Saturday market. The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and the majority of commercial galleries are also within easy walking distance and so are many historic sites such as the Wapping district and community facilities such as the Tasmanian Aquatic (Swimming) Centre, the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens and the Queen's Domain.
