Hobart Hughes, aka John E Hughes, graduated from City Art Institute in 1979 . He developed the Animation Co Op and co-formed the Even Orchestra, a multi media animation-theatre that toured nationally and internationally. Hughes combines animation with sculpture, producing works for Perspecta (1999), the Olympic arts Festival (2000) and the Kandos Contemporary Art Festival (2013). He also makes figurative sculpture and exhibits at Boutwell Draper Galley and Damien Minton Gallery. Hughes is a Lecturer in Time Based Art at the College of Fine Arts, UNSW.

In his Art Forum presentation The Lost Consciousness, Hughes will discuss his work through the cultural and physiological context of human consciousness, a theme that pervades his work via a post-modern surrealism, where Freudian analysis is replaced by consciousness studies, Gestalt therapy and various modalities of contemporary psychotherapy.
