The University of Tasmania Scholarships program offers a range of awards. Some are based on area of study; others on financial hardship or to students from particular areas of the state. Visual Arts Scholarships
Examples of Scholarships that are available to students studying in the Visual Arts are:
- Department of Education Accommodation Allowance for Tertiary Students
The Accommodation Allowance for Tertiary Students (AATS) scheme provides financial support to students who must live away from (40km or more) their usual home in order to study at a tertiary institution. A new application form is required each year. View details and the application form.
- Rosamond McCulloch Studio
The Rosamond McCulloch Studio is a four month residency in Paris, offered annually. This residency is open to Tasmanian visual arts graduates of the University of Tasmania who currently reside in Tasmania. The successful applicant will receive an Arts Tasmania grant to assist with service fees, airfares and stipend. The Rosamond McCulloch Studio residency will be advertised in the Mercury and Examiner newspapers for applications of interest in August of each year.
- Alcorso Artists Residency, Environment Prize & Honours Scholarship
The Alcorso Foundation in partnership with the University of Tasmania offers a $2000 Environment Prize and a $1,000 Environment Honours Scholarship annually. The Alcorso Foundation also accepts applications from artists practising across all forms for a self-directed residency in Italy in 2010, valued at $12,000 to help finance artistic and professional development.
- Fullbright Postgraduate Scholarship
This award is for Australian citizens wishing to undertake an American higher degree or carry out research towards an Australian higher degree in the United States.
- Goddard Sapin-Jaloustre Scholarship Trust
The Goddard Sapin-Jaloustre Scholarship Trust supports Australian Nationals pursuing courses of study or instruction, or conducting research or other projects in France. A number of scholarships of varying value are awarded. Most common are scholarships of around $5000 between 1-3 months in duration.
- Anne and Gordon Samstag International Visual Arts Scholarships
The highly prestigious Samstag Scholarships - presented through the South Australian School of Art - pay for all the costs of twelve months of overseas study, including provision of a particularly generous stipend, return airfares and institutional study fees.
- Sarah & William Holmes Scholarships
These two scholarships are offered each year to allow holders to carry out an intensive study of prints at the British Museum, London, for a period of up to twelve months.The £9,500 prize is shared between two winners.
- Asialink Residencies
Aisialink visual arts residencies offers up to $12,000 grants which go towards travel, living and project expenses, and affords recipients the opportunity for in-depth research, stimulating cultural exchanges, international collaboration and uninterrupted creative time.

Unfortunately, financial struggle is often part and parcel of life as a university student. If you are not already experiencing financial hardship you are probably struggling hard to avoid it. This information aims to provide you with some helpful hints to better manage your finances while at university and deal with financial crisis should it strike you.
- Safety Net Grants
The purpose of the University of Tasmania's Safety Net Grant Scheme is to provide emergency financial assistance to eligible students who are experiencing financial hardship which is adversely affecting their education. The main criteria for assistance under the Scheme is that a student demonstrates a genuine need and that their capacity for continued study may be in jeopardy due to financial hardship.
