Introduction to Alternative Jewellery Design will focus on the use of everyday materials in the creation of wearable, small-scale objects. The participants will be guided through a range of exercises that challenge their perceived notions of jewellery.
The workshop will be structured around a series of design exercises that are expanded into alternative approaches to object making. Two and three-dimensional forms will be explored using a range of materials such as: paper, cardboard, fabrics, plastics, hardware items and found materials. Students will be encouraged to collect materials that can be used to diversify their own design and making approaches. Student learning will be facilitated through a variety of formats including: workshop demonstrations, presentations and tutorials.
Location:
Tasmanian School of Art, Hobart
Lecturer:
Natalie Holtsbaum
Natalie is a Gold and Silversmithing Graduate from RMIT, based in Tasmania, she works predominantly with jewellery and installation. Holtsbaum has exhibited in Singapore, New York, Sydney and Melbourne.
One focus of Holtsbaum's is to create specific occasion and exhibition work, where impermanence can be the dominating factor, while a second and equal concern is traditional technique and permanence, where paying respect to material by honouring it with process allows longevity for the item.
Through using ethically sourced materials, Holtsbaum attempts to captivate an essence of human interaction and cultural identity in her work. Recent pieces have been collected by The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and commissioned by Life Is Art Foundation for David Walsh.
