Artists may concentrate on a specific area of work or may use a combination of these techniques. They may specialise as an:
Artist (Fine/Visual Arts) who may perform the following tasks:
conceive and develop ideas for paintings, drawings, designs or installations
choose a subject and decide how to approach it
select a medium such as oil, watercolour, pencil, pastel, acrylic or ink
prepare grounds such as canvas, paper or board
mix or apply colours to the surface using appropriate techniques and taking into account the relationships of line, colour, design and form
produce designs or illustrations for publications
run workshops and/or oversee community arts projects.
Cartoonist who may perform the following tasks:
conceive and develop ideas for cartoons, using illustrations and words (if appropriate)
prepare rough or finished drawings
submit designs to editors for approval
prepare notes and instructions for finishing and layout
supervise final layout and suggest improvements
supervise photography of artwork.
Printmaker who may perform the following tasks:
etch designs onto metal plates using acid to produce prints
prepare the printmaking and ink surfaces, and transfer the image to print material
cut designs into wood or lino, prepare the screens for screen printing and execute the lithographs.
Sculptor who may perform the following tasks:
conceive and develop a design for sculpture
decide on the material and techniques to be used and select materials of suitable proportions, quality and texture
sketch designs or make models of wax or plaster
carve, model or assemble materials to the desired form using hand or power tools
fire clay objects in kilns
prepare moulds for casting sculptures in metal.
Artists work in studios. They may share rented space with other artists. They may sell their work to or through art galleries.
