The Faculty of Arts last undertook a significant review of its curriculum some 20 years ago. In the intervening period, the curriculum has become fragmented in many areas, with some academic programs becoming siloed, and others developing overlapping subjects.
Student choices about what to study also affect our capacity to offer units. Significant numbers of our subjects have low and declining student interest – whilst having low enrolments is not a financially viable situation, it more importantly impacts considerably on the student learning experience. In order to maintain the wide diversity of majors and minors in Arts, it is important that we make sure that every unit we offer contributes effectively to student learning. It is difficult to maintain high quality courses with low enrolments, given the importance of student interaction and discussion as part of the learning activity — this is reflected in the student feedback we receive through various channels, including many SETL results.
