This is an example of the tools that you may use during the course. We recommend that you purchase your tools after you have commenced the ASFF enabling program 'Tool Start' at the beginning of first year.

Tools
- Smoothing Plane: No 4 or No 5 (No 5 recommended
- Pair of Tenon saws: 1 x cross cut and 1 x rip cut. New "Adria" are excellent but expensive. Older pre 1950's "Disston" brand are superb saws and inexpensive.
- Dovetail Saw: Again "Adria" or "Lie-Nielsen" are quality tools, but "Pax" or older English or American brands with heavy backs are very good tools.
- Block Plane: Low angle, and ideally with an adjustable mouth. The very best of these are modern "Lie Nielsen" and "Veritas" brands, if you can afford them.
- Try Square: Engineers type 100mm.
- Steel Rule: 300mm "Toledo" brand.
- Marking Knife: Flat bladed Japanese type or "Pfeil" Violin makers 15mm.
- Cutting Gauge: "Veritas" wheel marking type recommended.
- Scraper: Flat metal cabinet type. Try to get a stiff thick one.
- Scraper Burnisher You can make your own with an old tungsten router cutter shank.
- Piercing Saw: Jewellers or fret type with blade clamps.
- Chisels: Bevel, fine edged. 3mm, 6mm, 10mm, 12mm, 19mm, 25mm or imperial equivalents.
- Japanese Water Stones: 800, 1200.
- Clutch Pencils: 0.35, 0.5, 0.7mm
- Safety Equipment: Ear Protection, eye protection and a comfortable dust mask.
- Tape Measure: 5m "Stanley" or "Lufkin"

Drawing tools required
- Set squares 45/45 & 60/30
- T square
- 360 degree protractor
- Scale rule with scales 1:5 1:10 1:20
- Pad A4 graph paper 1mm or 2mm
- Good compass
- Plastic erasers
- Technical drawing pens. (Sold in pack of 3.) Typically 0.2, 0.4, 0.8.
- HB pencils, 4B pencils, 2B pencils, 6H pencils, clutch pencils 0.3 & 0.5, pack coloured pencils
- Glue stick
- Scissors
- Visual diary A4
Other Equipment
- Try or Fore Plane:No 6, 7 or 8.
- Spokeshave: Flat face No 152.
- Adjustable sliding bevel: 150mm or larger.
- Set of twist drills: Engineers type or spur centre 1 – 12mm or imperial equivalent.
- Countersink bits: Small and medium engineers de burring type.
- Hammers:1 x 10oz cross pein, and 1 x 16oz claw
- Rubber mallet: Inexpensive white rubber if available.
- Veneer Saw: Make your own if left handed
- Scientific Calculator: Must have trigonometric functions.
- Steel rulers:150mm and 600mm
- "Toledo"Veneer Calipers:150mm or 200mm digital.
- Centre Punch: Engineers spring type is desirable.
- Camelia Oil: For rust protection
- Japanese Water Stone 4000 grit
- Non-slip bench mat
