Japanese In-Country Program
JAPAN IN-COUNTRY PROGRAM 2012
Program dates: 16 November to 26 December 2012
The Japanese In-Country Program in Japan runs during spring/summer and offers students an exciting opportunity to develop their language skills and complete parts of their degree in a native-speaking environment. The program is fully accredited by the University of Tasmania as 25% overseas study units (HMJ060&061).
For UTAS students who are enrolled in 200 and 300 level language units.
- Four week and six week intensive programs
- Equivalent to 25% course load or two units of Japanese language study
- Accommodation is home stay with local Japanese family
- Excursions to various historical and cultural sites (fees to be charged separately)
- Assessment procedures to be conducted by hosting institutions and subject to a moderation process by UTAS.
This year two courses are offered:
Intermediate Level Course (Equivalent to HMJ204 & HMJ205)
- Prereq: HMJ102 or TCE Stage 4 (HA), TQA senior Secondary 5C(HA).
- Location: Fukuoka City, Fukuoka
- Duration: six weeks (Approx. 143 hours of lessons)
- Dates: 16 November to 26 December 2012
- Hosting Institution: Asahi Nihongo Language and Internship School
- Accommodation Style: Home stay with local family (recommended) or serviced apartment (optional)

Advanced Level Course (Equivalent to HMJ316 & level 300 Japanese unspecified)
- Prereq: HMJ205
- Location: Fukuoka City, Fukuoka
- Duration: four weeks (Approx. 95 hours of lessons)
- Date: 16 November to 17 December 2012
- Hosting Institution: Asahi Nihongo Language and Internship School
- Accommodation Style: Home stay with local family (recommended) or serviced apartment (optional)

Additional Information
Fukuoka and Asahi Nihongo
Fukuoka is the capital city of Fukuoka Prefecture and is situated on the northern shore of the island of Kyūshū. Fukuoka City features a subtropical climate with mild winters. It is the most populous and largest city in Kyūshū, and is praised for its green spaces in a metropolitan setting (Monocle,The World's top 25 most liveable cities 2009). The host institution, Asahi Japanese Language School, has a long established partnership with SALS, offering highly experienced Japanese Language education. In both Intermediate and Advanced level courses, students would stay with local host families where they can experience real life in Japan, and learn first-hand about Japanese culture and customs.
(*Fukuoka is not as seismically active as many other parts of Japan.)

Costs
- Tuition: Students will enrol in 25% overseas study units that are credited to their degree and for which HECS charges apply. Tuition fees are not paid by students to host institutions.
- Program costs:
- Airfare to Japan (Fukuoka/Mie) - approx. $1500-2000
- Accommodation and administration fee (paid to UTAS) - Intermediate program $1700, Advanced program $1500
- Daily living costs (food) - approx. $10-15 per day
- Commuting fare - approx. $200 (applied for both programs)
- Cultural Trip fee - approx. $200
- Total approx costs (including enrolment fees) - approx $4000 - $5000
- The $300.00 administration fees is required as a deposit to secure a place on the program. You can pay this online or through the University cashier.
- One stop payment on line.
You can pay on line with a credit card. Please enter your details, select the button that says $300.00 Deposit/Admin fee for Japan In-Country Program JICOP.
OR
- At the cashier
Alternatively you can pay at a University Cashier desk. Please ask the cashier to access code '790 Asian Languages and Studies' and to select Japan In-Country payment.
The balance amount can be paid in the same way - select the correct button for your program, either $1400.00 Intermediate JICOP - Balance of fees, or $1200.00 Advanced JICOP - Balance of Fees.
Scholarships and assistance
There are two types of scholarship available to supplement the program fees: Faculty of Arts scholarship and Asian Languages and Studies Program scholarship. The student can receive one of these only. Both scholarships are for $750.00.
Faculty of Arts scholarship you are eligible for the Faculty of Arts scholarship if you have completed 100% of Arts units and if you have an Arts major. For this scholarship you will need to provide your travel itinerary. OR:
Asian Languages and Studies Program scholarship (PDF 109KB) you may for this scholarship only if you are not eligible for the Faculty of Arts scholarship
Financial assistance is also available through OS Help. Check the eligibility and conditions and apply if it suits your needs.
What do I need to do?
- Contact the Program Coordinator to express interest in the program. Please note that all participants must be 18 years or over.
- Attend the information session
- Submit the UTAS In-Country Application Form
Complete the In-Country Application Form (PDF 96KB) and submit to the Program Coordinator
- UTAS enrolment form
Enrol in the overseas units HMJ060 and HMJ061 (Overseas Study - Japanese ).
You will need to complete a paper enrolment for this. Go to your eStudentcentre page on the UTAS website, click on manage enrolment, and print a variation form. Submit it to the SALS office.
- Pay the deposit.
You can pay on line with a credit card on this webpage One stop payment or at a University cashier, quoting "One Stop payment no 790".
- Book your tickets for travel, and advise itinerary and emergency contacts
You will need to make your own travel bookings and inform the program coordinator of your itinerary through the Travel Plan Form (word 259KB). The travel plan form is required by UTAS for insurance purposes.
- Intermediate and Advance Level Programs at Asahi Nihongo - Homestay booking
Complete the JICOP Accommodation Form and return to the program coordinator.
- Make pre-travel preparations
Read the In-Country Program Pre-Travel Advice (PDF 131KB). This document includes important information and advice for your safety and wellbeing, and it is required reading. On the SALS in-country application form you will need to sign that you have read the advice.

Submit a Faculty or an Asian Languages and Studies Program scholarship application form and apply for OS Help
There are two types of scholarship that you can apply for. You can receive one of these only. Follow the links given for the application forms. Both scholarships are for $750.00.
- Faculty of Arts scholarship you are eligible for the Faculty of Arts scholarship if you have completed 100% of Arts units and if you have an Arts major. For this scholarship you will need to provide your travel itinerary. OR:
- Asian Languages and Studies Program scholarship applying for this scholarship is available to you only if you are not eligible for the Faculty of Arts scholarship.
- Tasmania Overseas Scholarship - this scholarship is available for up to $1,000.00 for a short term overseas study program such as the China In-Country Program. If you are receiving one of the above scholarships of $750.00 you can apply for a "top up" of $250.00 from the Tasmania Overseas Scholarship. The scholarships is competitive and your academic record and progress will be considered in the selection process.
Financial assistance is also available through OS Help. Check the eligibility and conditions and apply if it suits your needs.
- Prepare passport and visa
You need a passport that is valid for six months beyond the start of your program. Check your passport and apply for a new one if necessary. Submit a copy of the bio-data page to the Program Coordinator.
You can get a passport photo from the TUU shop on campus and from most camera shops.
- Read and understand the conditions of the UTAS Student Travel Insurance policy and make personal insurance arrangements if the cover does not suit your needs.
Students who are eligible for University of Tasmania's Student Travel Insurance are covered at no charge. Be sure to notify the UTAS Insurance Officer of any pre-existing medical conditions that you have and do not travel against medical advice. More information is in the Pre-travel Advice (see point no. 8)
- Check the DFAT website information regularly
Regularly check the travel advice for Japan provided on the DFAT website. We will cover as much detail as possible to prepare you for your time in Japan in the pre-departure information session, however we expect you to read through the DFAT website's wealth of information and be on the look out for updates. We recommend that you register with the Department through the Australian Government's SmartTraveller website.
- Attend the pre-departure information sessions - attendance at the sesssions is compulsory.
