2013 LOMBOK IN-COUNTRY PROGRAM, UNIVERSITAS MATARAM, KEY INFORMATION

  • Enrol in an in-country Indonesian language program that gives you immersion-in-culture and daily interaction with people.
  • Supportive local university teachers integrate rigorous coursework with interesting cultural activities and excursions. Rewarding experiences living in the community, whilst studying, will enrich your understanding of the Indonesian language and way of life.
  • The University of Tasmania in conjunction with Charles Darwin University, the University of New England, the University of the Sunshine Coast and Mataram University offers intensive language programs in Lombok, Indonesia.
  • The in-country programs are offered at 8 levels, from total beginners to advanced. Choose to study one unit over three weeks, or two units consecutively over six weeks.
  • UTAS and other students can gain credit towards their degree program. Available also to people not currently studying at university.
  • Please note that all participants must be 18 years or over.

Program Administration

Costs

  • $300 administrative fee to be paid at the time of UTAS application
  • HECS on the units you undertake (paid as you normally pay your HECS)
  • Airfare Australia-Lombok return (around $1200)
  • Accommodation in Lombok (homestay accommodation is roughly $150 per month)
  • Meals in Lombok (allow $15 per day if you eat locally)

Travel Support

  • Faculty of Arts Overseas Study Scholarship  ($750)
  • Asian Languages and Studies Program In-country Scholarship  ($750)
    The Asian Languages and Studies scholarship is offered as an alternative to the Faculty of Arts Overseas Study Scholarship. If you are studying a major within the Faculty of Arts and have completed 100% of Arts units, you may be eligible for the Faculty scholarship. If you are not studying an Arts major, you are encouraged to apply for an Asian Languages and Studies scholarship. You may, if you wish, apply for both scholarships (fill out both application forms and submit them separately). However, you will be entitled to receive only one of the two scholarships, and not both at one time.
  • You may be eligible to receive a student loans through the OS Help scheme.  Read the policy document  and apply using the OS application form (up to $5000).  
     

Application and Enrolment Process

  • Start now!:
  1. Read the Asian Languages & Studies In-Country Program 2012-2013 Pre-Travel Advice 
  2. Complete Asian Languages and Studies In-Country application form and submit to Mandy Pink. 
  3. Pay $300 administrative fee online with a credit card  or at a University cashier, quoting "One Stop payment no 790" and "Lombok Program". 
  4. Complete Travel Plan form and submit to Mandy Pink
  5. Completeand submit the Lombok program application form.
  6. Enrol in your UTAS units.  This is a paper enrolment (cannot be done online).  Log in to your eStudentcentre page on the UTAS website, click on current details, and print a 2013 variation form. Enrol in the overseas unit HMN060, or units HMN060 and HMN061 (Overseas Study - Indonesian) in semester 3 2013 and sign the form.  Submit it to the program coordinator.
  7. Apply for visa.  See below.

Travel Arrangements

  • Book flights soon.  You need to be in Lombok by the afternoon of 1 January 2013.  International travel will be Australia to Denpasar, Bali.  From there you can fly domestically to Lombok (15 mins) or catch the ferry from Padangbai (4 hours)
  • Your passport must be valid for 6 months beyond your date of entry to Indonesia.
  • You will be applying for a Socio-Cultural visa (see section below), which allows you to stay in Indonesia for 60 days.  All visa applications will be processed through the Indonesian consulate in Darwin.  You will be advised by Richard Curtis when it is time to apply (around late October).
  • Contact your doctor or a Travel Clinic for advice about vaccinations
  • Read the conditions of the UTAS Student Travel Insurance policy and make personal insurance arrangements if the cover does not suit your needs.

Visa application

The visa application normally takes five working days for the Darwin Consulate to process (assuming information supplied is complete and correct- this is your responsibility to check this NOT the consulate's). Students can send their visa applications after they have completed their enrolment applications. However, students should organise their visas well in advance of their departure date to Indonesia.

1. Complete and sign the visa application form (PDF 1243KB) for a Single Visit visa. The phone number for the Darwin Consulate is (08) 8943 0200. Their website is: www.kemlu.go.id/darwin 

Here are general instructions for the social cultural visa (word 24KB) from the Consulate, the form itself also has instructions on the top and below are instructions for filling in specific sections in the visa form:

  • In section one put '2' in the box (Single Visit visa)
  • For Occupation abroad write 'student'
  • For Address of office write: Charles Darwin University, Ellengowan Drive, Casuarina, NT, 0810
  • For Address of residence in Indonesia write: University of Mataram, Jl Majapahit No. 62, Mataram 83125
  • For Address of Residence in abroad, write your own home address
  • For reason for applying visa, write 'in-country language study'
  • For Name of reference, write, Universitas Mataram
  • For Address of reference write: Jl Majapahit No. 62, Mataram 83125; Telp: (0370) 633007, 631166

2. Along with your visa application form in duplicate you will need to provide two passport size colour photos (don't forget to take a couple of spares with you to Lombok) and your passport, valid for six months.

3. Include payment of $60 (money order preferable) to: Consulate of the Republic Indonesia in Darwin

4. Include a self-addressed prepaid registered envelope so that the Darwin Consulate can return your passport with visa inside directly to your postal address.

5. All students send their visa applications via registered post to:

Richard Curtis will provide the consulate with the necessary sponsors' letters from CDU and the University of Mataram.

The committee of fishermen who had approached the Govt. and received money to turn their village into a tourist attraction, and how they were reseeding coral reefs that in a previous age they had blown up to catch the fish!! How they were having all the children taught English so that they had a better start in life. This village was proactive - and that was good to see."
