Isabel has a great passion for teaching Chinese language. In 2007 and 2011, Isabel won two Teaching Merit Certificates, both nominated by her students. Isabel coordinates the Chinese language program on the Launceston campus. Since 2007, she has extended her teaching to include students on the Hobart campus and she has coordinated the first year Chinese language program across campuses. She has also taught at all year levels – from first year to advanced.
Isabel’s research areas encompass applied linguistics including second/foreign language teaching and learning; second language acquisition; intercultural studies; use of technology in language teaching and learning; language for specific purposes; learning styles and learning strategies; teaching Chinese as a foreign language; action research in second/foreign language classrooms. In particular, she has a strong interest in the area of culture and communication in tertiary education. In the past few years, she has published several papers in journals in the field of language teaching, and has presented papers at international conferences.
Her project, funded through a Teaching Development Grant, was completed successfully in collaboration with a diverse number of people at UTAS in 2010. It produced a comprehensive, flexible teaching and learning resource, comprising a CD, wiki, MyLO site and print booklets, designed to supplement classroom teaching of Chinese. The whole package provides students with the resources required to pursue their own Chinese language learning, enabling them to advance to studying second- and third-year Chinese language units with a solid foundation in writing and reading.
