The language units develop students' skills in all four skill sets - reading, writing, speaking and listening - and cater to all levels from beginner to advanced. Units in translation and interpreting also provide an opportunity to develop specific skills in these areas. The Japanese program at UTAS aims at developing a deep understanding of not only the language, but the society and culture behind it. Studies units explore traditional and modern Japanese society, literature, film, and traditions of performance.
Previous graduates from our Japanese programs have gone on to a wide range of interesting careers in fields such as diplomacy, trade, education and the arts. Many of our graduates have gone to work in Japan on the JET program as either Assistant Language Teachers or Coordinators of International Relations. All have found the program provided an excellent base of skills and knowledge for their professional lives. Other graduates have been successful in winning competitive international scholarships to further their research and academic careers.
Demonstrated language skills will enhance any career and open options for work overseas. Language learning can also equip you with communication and cultural skills that are welcomed in many professions. Here are some examples:
The University College Program in Languages enables college students to have a concurrent enrolment at UTAS and gain a result in first year introductory level language in the Diploma in Languages. The units equate to 25% of a full-time university first year load, and may count towards a degree at UTAS or at another university. Once accepted, students attend six workshops during the year at one of the three UTAS campuses and complete work online.
The program in Japanese will build upon your TCE language study to complete the requirements of first year university level Japanese. It will develop competence in beginners spoken and written Japanese. It is designed to prepare you for UTAS second year level language study.
In Fukuoka - During the spring/summer vacation we offer a structured intermediate and advanced language programs in Fukuoka city in the west of Japan. "I really loved the day to day life experience in Japan. Going to class, meeting people regularly, being able to converse in Japanese and read it everywhere I went!"
"I had a wonderful, and extremely accommodating home-stay family. I really enjoyed the opportunity to live with another family and experience a different lifestyle. We will definitely stay in touch."
"While I was in Japan I was able to participate in the Setsubun festival at local shrines and even with my host family at their place. I also was able to see the lantern festival in Nagasaki which was unbelievable! The school organised a trip around Kyushu for us which took us to Japanese hot springs and to Kumamoto castle."
