Innovation involves a qualitative change in processes, goods, services, and organisational methods that hopefully produce positive economic or social benefits. Due to the qualitative nature of these changes, measuring innovation – that is to provide meaningful quantitative data – poses some interesting challenges. The Australian Innovation Research Centre has developed a methodology for measuring and quantifying innovation in Tasmanian businesses – the Tasmanian Innovation Census. Data from the Census forms the basis of a number of reports and further projects.
