Graduate Profile 1:

Heather Cotching
Bachelor of Economics, 2005
Majoring in Economic Policy and Finance
Graduate Placement with the Commonwealth Treasury, Canberra

Why did you choose UTAS to complete your degree?

"The University of Tasmania has a well regarded economics degree and I wanted to remain in the State".

How did you make your decisions prior to uni and during uni about what you wanted to study?

"I initially enrolled in a commerce degree with economics major but switched into the economics degree because of the greater subject choice. The economic policy major combined theoretical and practical knowledge and the finance major tied in well with economics."

How has what you studied at Uni, helped you in your career?

"The UTAS economics degree is well regarded by potential employers."

What gave you the edge over other graduates?

"Good results, a scholarship and practical, relevant work experience."

Where you working now and what are your plans for the future?

"Currently I am completing a one year graduate placement with the Commonwealth Treasury in Canberra and I have plans to remain there beyond that period."

What is your advice to students considering a business degree at UTAS?

"Choose your course and subjects carefully to avoid changing them at a later date and taking longer to graduate."


Graduate Profile 2:

Ted Alexander
Bachelor of Economics with Honours, 2004
Majoring in Finance and Analytical Economics

Why did you choose UTAS to complete your degree?

"I chose to study at the University of Tasmania because I knew that its Economics degree was regarded as highly as any other in the country. I completed my Bachelor of Economics in 2003, with majors in Finance and Analytical Economics. I found the degree both challenging and interesting and decided to do Honours in 2004."

What gave you the edge over other graduates?

"Over the summer between 2003 and 2004, I completed a Cadetship in the International Department of the Reserve Bank of Australia , and obtained a graduate position there for the following year. Working at the RBA introduced me to some of the nation's brightest young graduates, but confirmed to me the high level of understanding and skills that one obtains through an Economics degree at the University of Tasmania ."

What is your advice to students considering a business degree at UTAS?

"I have no hesitation in recommended a Bachelor of Economics to any potential student, especially considering the high levels of employment in meaningful jobs that its graduates obtain. I honestly believe that there is no other degree that offers the graduate such well-rounded and practical skills for the workforce."


Graduate Profile 3:

Alison Turner
Bachelor of Economics
Majoring in Analytical Economics and Finance

  Why did you choose UTAS to complete your degree?

"I joined Treasury as a cadet in March 2002 after completing Year 12. In 2004 I was completing my third year of a part time Bachelor of Economics degree, whilst working full time."

"Since joining Treasury I have been involved in the development of two State Budgets in the Budget Management Branch; assisted in developing taxation revenue estimates for the Budget in the Inter-government Financial Policy Branch; and am currently involved in a review of the Vegetation Management Code of Practice (part of the Tasmanian Electricity Code) and the development of the annual Energy Supply Industry Performance Report in the Government Prices Oversight Commission/Office of the Tasmanian Energy Regulator."

What gave you the edge over other graduates?

"For me, working at Treasury while studying part time has given me the opportunity to improve many skills including communication, written, analytical and research skills, and develop my leadership, technical and professional skills."

"I have enjoyed the challenges presented to me as a cadet over the past two and a half years and look forward to further exciting challenges over the remaining years of my cadetship/degree."


Graduate Profile 4:

Khim T Khor
Bachelor of Economics, 2003
Majoring in Business Economics and Finance

Why did you choose UTAS to complete your degree?

"When I first came to Tasmania in 2000, I was enrolled in the degree for Bachelor of Commerce. However, I decided to change my degree to Bachelor of Economics in my second year because I found that the subjects offered by the School of Economics are more challenging, interesting and very useful for my future career path."

What gave you the edge over other graduates?

"During my third year of University, CPA offered me a summer working experience as an assistant performance auditor in a Tasmanian Audit firm. During that period, I realised the knowledge that I gained from the finance and economics majors was indeed very useful."

What is your advice to students considering a business degree at UTAS?

"The Bachelor of Economics offered by University of Tasmania is well-recognised in my home country ( Malaysia ). The BEc provides a range of careers opportunities, including: financial advisers/analyst, stock broker, policy maker, banking sector, foreign exchange market and so many more. So, do not hesitate and miss the opportunity to enrol in economics and finance major. I can assure that the courses will benefit your future career prospects."
