Gary has taught in many areas in his academic career including financial and corporate accounting, auditing, international finance and more recently social and environmental accounting and corporate sustainability. He has successfully supervised 5 PhD students, 4 Masters by Research Students and numerous honours and applied project candidates. He is presently supervising 2 PhD students.
Gary has worked in academia since 1980, commencing as a tutor at the (then) Riverina College of Advanced Education in Wagga Wagga. Prior to joining academia, he worked in a Chartered Accounting firm in Melbourne for 6 years during which time he studied part-time for his undergraduate accounting degree. After completing his undergraduate studies, Gary completed post-graduate studies in Education at the Western Australian Institute of Technology and in Commercial Data Processing at the Footscray Institute of Technology. He then completed a PhD, which involved a detailed investigation of corporate motivations for environmental reporting.
Gary holds the status of CPA with CPA Australia and was President of the Tasmanian Division of CPA Australia in 2006 and Deputy President in 2005 and he retains a position on the Tasmanian Divisional Council of CPA Australia. He is a current board member of Australian National Business Schools. He is also a registered company auditor and primarily uses this registration for community groups and charitable purposes.
Gary’s main research interests are in the areas of social, environmental and sustainability reporting, corporate governance and accounting education. He has numerous presentations at both international and national conferences and seminars and is widely published in refereed scholarly and professional journals in these areas.
