The Faculty of Business at the University of Tasmania enjoys an excellent and growing research reputation, both nationally and internationally. The Faculty is made up of the School of Accounting and Corporate Governance, the School of Economics and Finance, the School of Management, and the Australian Innovation Research Centre (AIRC) – all of which conduct diverse research.
The AIRC is a world-renowned research centre on innovation studies, particularly in relation to public policy development and impact assessment. The AIRC recently completed the first and second phases of an innovation census on all small-to-medium businesses in Tasmania funded by the Tasmanian State Government, and this census is the most comprehensive and complete of its type conducted anywhere in the world. The AIRC continues to provide groundbreaking research and is currently working on a federal government-funded project in relation to impact assessment in the forestry industry in Tasmania.
The arrival over the past two years of five leading research professors to the Faculty - in the areas of finance and the economics of financial crises, natural resource economics, marketing, innovation and entrepreneurship and accounting - clearly demonstrates the Faculty's vision and commitment to be at the cutting-edge of contemporary business research. The Faculty has a vibrant and growing program for Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)1 degree candidates, and welcomes quality students from all over the world wishing to pursue their research training in a distinctive and supportive environment.
[1] The Doctor of Business Administration is not currently available to international students studying on a student visa.

The social and psychological aspects of work and organisations such as employee wellbeing, social networking, organisational climate, culture, change management, communication and cooperation, and general human resource management issues are the focus of a large number of staff in the School of Management. A major area of research is mental health and the workplace, and the concept of ‘psychological capital’. A leading researcher in this area is Dr Angela Martin, who is currently working on the ARC Linkage Partnership project, Promoting employee mental health through the development of managers’ psychological capital: A controlled field experiment. Partners in this project include Beyond Blue, Workcover Tasmania and the Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Corporate Social Responsibility, Age and Identity in Consumer Behaviour is an area of research among a number of marketing researchers in the School of Management. This area seeks to move beyond value chain analyses, to engage with the argument that consumers are increasingly interested in making purchase decisions based not only on corporate ethics and a company’s role in society, but also on other non-utilitarian factors such as attachment, meaning, and personal and social identity. Two current projects seek to explore the extent to which consumers have adopted a positive attitude towards environmental issues and incorporate environmental information into their consumption decisions, and the growing impact of age as a factor in consumer decision-making as a result of changing demographics. In this respect, a further area of study for a number of researchers is the marketing and consumption of Arts, Recreation and Tourism.

Analysis and Modelling of Economic Systems Using Accounting Data at micro and macro levels is being undertaken by multi-disciplinary teams of researchers in the School of Accounting and Corporate Governance. Examples of projects are the development of decision-support financial risk management systems for Australian Defence organisations supported through ARC and CRC grants; improving the validity and reliability of statistical modelling of financial asset valuation in capital markets; applying commercial principles to national income data to better integrate theories and models of micro and macro economics; and constructing measures of corporate governance to link hard-to-measure social context variables to accounting return and risk data.

A number of staff in the School of Management work on studies related to social ventures and entrepreneurship. One study uses resource-advantage theory to frame processes in social enterprises using findings from a field study of entrepreneurial social enterprises in New Zealand and Australia. A second explores the inter-relationships between entrepreneurial experience, explanatory style, and effectuation logic in an attempt to better understand the antecedents of entrepreneurial self-efficacy for policy and practice. Other staff members are working on a project to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of entrepreneurship education in Australasia. In addition, others are developing a framework of how corporate entrepreneurship might be harnessed to create more efficient and effective agribusiness value chains in desperately poor nations that generate value for the consumer, the organisations and society.
