Distance education is flexible learning that enables you to undertake a course of study at the same time as balancing work, family or lifestyle commitments.
This mode of study means that you are not restricted by your geographic location or the need to be physically present on campus at set times. The Faculty offers both Undergraduate and postgraduate opportunities in distance education.
Distance education opens up a world of possibilities for those wanting to obtain a tertiary qualification. You can enrol in course and study from anywhere in Australia, or the world.
If you are a professional looking to upgrade your qualifications, distance study can enhance your career options while giving you the flexibility to juggle competing demands on your time. You don't have to be at a 5pm class, or 10am tutorial – you choose when you study, at times that suit you and your life.
If you are new to university or returning after a long break, distance education allows you to study at your own pace and also pursue your interests in a range of units available at UTAS.
Earning your degree through distance learning can be a convenient, but you do need to consider if distance study is right for you. You will need to take into consideration your professional and personal situation, and what will work best for you.
Are you disciplined and self-motivated? Are you comfortable and proficient with using the internet and email? Do you want to study at odd hours to fit around work and family? If so, distance is probably right for you. If, however, you prefer classes at a scheduled time and face-to-face contact with other students and lecturers, you should consider enrolling in on-campus classes to get the most out of your study.
All distance units are taught online. The university's learning platform, MyLO (My Learning Online), forms the core of how teaching and learning is delivered to students in an online environment. Within this online environment, you can engage with your learning through access to study materials and resources, interact or communicate with your lecturer and fellow students, listen to lectures, submit assignments and participate in online discussions or tutorials.
Many of our distance courses do not require you to sit exams. However, for those that do, it with be either a take-home exam or you will be able to sit an examination at one of our campuses, or at an alternative centre.
The materials you receive will depend on the unit of study that you undertake. All units are delivered through MyLO. Units can be fully online with all the study materials and resources available electronically, or you may also receive a CD or DVD as an additional resource to complement the materials available on MyLO.
All packs contain information on Distance Education at the Faculty of Business and a pamphlet on support for off-campus students.
The Flexible Education Office is responsible for mailing materials to all students enrolled in distance units offered by the Faculty of Business. Materials are usually sent out about two weeks before the commencement of the semester, and students are sent an email to notify them when their pack has been mailed out.
If you enrol in a distance unit after the semester has commenced, the Flexible Education Office monitors new enrolments on a daily basis and packs are normally sent out the day after you have added the unit/s to your enrolment.
You can use the UTAS Course and Unit Handbook and specify your search to display units that are being offered as off-campus or distance units.
UTAS offers a range of learning and personal support services that students can access if they require assistance in the transition to university study and life.
For distance students, an online orientation program has been developed that provides the tools to be an active and successful member of the UTAS community, enhancing student familiarity with UTAS and its support programs. The orientation program is available from the First Year at UTAS website. This website is a valuable starting point for new students, and has information on programs such as UniStart, Learning Support Services and Personal Support Services.

The library offers a Flexible Library Service to students living more than 40km from the Launceston and Sandy Bay campuses, including those living overseas. You must register before you can use this service. The Flexible Library Service allows you to request specific items from the library catalogue and have them posted to a designated address, or articles or extracts from books to be posted or emailed as an electronic attachment. After you have been admitted to a course and have accepted your offer, you will be given a UTAS email account, username and password. You will need to log in to the eStudentCentre portal using your username and password, and add the units that you wish to study.
To assist you in choosing the units to enrol in, it is highly recommended that you use the Course and Unit Handbook to research the options available to you, and to ensure that they are the correct units for your course and meet your course requirements.
The eStudentCentre portal is an online facility which you will use to view and manage your enrolment, including enrolling or withdrawing from units, personal information, fees, invoices and payments, eCAF (Commonwealth Assistance), examination timetables, results and other student matters.
