A BEc allows students to develop a detailed understanding of the issues and factors, both national and international, that determine how macro and micro economic systems are organised and how decisions are made by individuals, businesses, successfully undertake either the organisations, firms and governments.
A BEc is an exciting and challenging degree that provides graduates with a valuable and marketable set of skills. Through the study of economic principles and practices, students will develop an understanding of economics as a ‘way of thinking’, as well as the insight and expertise to understand the role and impact that economics has in our lives and society. Students will gain a sound knowledge of the issues and factors that determine how economic systems are organised and how decisions are made by individuals, firms and governments based on human behaviour, beliefs, structure and constraints.
This degree introduces students to the complexities of economic practices and strategies and ensures graduates have the statistical and analytical skills required by employers to understand business reports, investigate economic issues in a scientific way and to communicate information in an effective manner. Graduates are equipped to work on important social and economic policy challenges faced by business and government, and have the skills and confidence to contribute to decision-making and the development of solutions which ensure the wellbeing of society.

The Economic Analysis major provides students with the fundamental tools and expertise for the economic analysis of macro and microeconomic models as well as econometrics. Students will be provided with the critical scientific techniques to successfully measure, analyse, project and explain a diverse set of economic
factors and scenarios. Students will be equipped to assist and influence key decision-makers in business and government with strategic planning, evaluation of alternative policies and regulations as well as possessing the skill to forecast future demands and other key variables.
The Economic Analysis major combines will with other majors as it provides the tools to evaluate economic policy, and assess business options. It combines well with the Finance major, as it provides students and their prospective employers with the skills to evaluate and test investment strategies and to forecast stock movements.
Graduates with an Economic Analysis major are highly valued for their strong analytical skills and their understanding of economic complexities and influence. Career opportunities for those who graduate with an Economic Analysis major include:
The Economic Foundations major provides students with a solid foundation in understanding the impact of policy settings and decisions at both the microeconomic and macroeconomic level. An understanding of economic policy enables graduates to assess the efficacy of competing strategies in achieving desired social and economic goals. Students will develop an understanding of economic and financial institutions, as well as developing an understanding of economic mechanisms and emerging issues in an increasingly globalised economy. Graduates will gain a sound understanding of the complex nature of economics in both a domestic and international context including the impacts of policy design and decisions.
This major is an excellent choice for students wishing to pursue a career in government or organisations that are involved in formulating, lobbying for, and implementing policy reform.
Economic Foundations graduates have excellent employment prospects with an enormous range of career options, especially in the public sector. Economics and economic policy is of special interest to governments because they have the potential to greatly influence decision-making and therefore social wellbeing. As an economic policy graduate you will have the knowledge and skills to contribute to government policy-making and will be well placed for a graduate career in any government department from Treasury and Foreign Affairs to Health, Natural Resources and the Environment. Economic policy graduates are also valued in private industry and enterprise.

Every day, individuals and firms have to make important financial decisions such as: What is the right way to construct and manage an investment portfolio? Should an investment be made? How should an investment be financed? What is the value of a company? Should dividends be paid? The Finance major gives you the skills to answer such questions in the financial world of tomorrow. The UTAS Finance major is tailored to meet the requirements of a career in the banking and finance industries. Graduates of this program are knowledgeable in the areas of capital markets and financial institutions, investment, financial planning, corporate finance, portfolio management, derivative securities and international finance.
Graduates of the Finance major have a strong foundation in the operation and functioning of the world’s financial and economic systems and will be well-prepared for a number of industry-based qualifications, including those offered by the Australian Financial Planning Association, the Australian Institute of Banking and Finance and the Securities Institute of Australia.

Students must have completed pre-tertiary subject Maths Applied, or a higher level mathematics subject. Success in pre-tertiary English and Economics would also be an advantage to your studies at University.
Students are encouraged to apply for recognition of prior learning, which includes formal study undertaken in recognised tertiary institutions, or other demonstrated learning achievement such as a diploma. When applying, you will be asked if you wish to gain credit for previous study. Please indicate 'yes' and ensure that certified copies of your certificates of completion are provided to the admissions office.
Submitting you application is the first step to becoming a student. If successful you will receive an offer. You must accept this offer online via the estudent centre.

Whether on-campus of off-campus, each student should allow approximately 10 hours of focussed study per unit, per week.
It is certainly possible to move degrees once you are at University, but this often depends on how much study you have completed in your current degree, and if you meet the entry requirements for the degree you are wishing to transfer to.
This is up to you, but this is certainly a popular choice. A combined degree is a specifically structured program which merges the core requirements of two different degrees. It enables students to graduate with the equivalent of two degrees in an accelerated time period. Combined degree offer students the advantage of greater depth and diversity of subject choices, and broader career opportunities.
