MBA START was introduced in 2011-12 as a pathway for Tasmanian residents considering postgraduate studies in Business. It allows students to begin study towards a Master of Business Administration by undertaking an academic preparation program, and one free postgraduate unit in Business. Starting a postgraduate degree without previous university study can be confronting, and students will succeed best if they are given access to academic skills training, a supportive group of fellow students, and a chance to try business education without committing a large amount of funds.
The purpose of an MBA is to educate managers and aspiring managers in current business theory and best practice. It emphasises the importance of work experience in providing a framework for learning about business practice, and for this reason there is a pathway through the Graduate Certificate of Management for applicants who have at least seven years relevant work experience, but who do not have a Bachelor's degree. The MBA START program will include enrolment in the Graduate Certificate of Management.
The Faculty of Business wishes to build strong relationships with the Tasmanian business community, and to encourage high levels of participation in postgraduate business education, so applicants are encouraged to discuss the program with their employers and get their support. Businesses are encouraged to consider which staff members would benefit most from the program, and to nominate staff to participate.
Benjamin Hooper (pictured above) participated in the MBA START pilot program in 2011 says "I would recommend this program to anyone who hasn't studied for a while. The whole program demystifies university and explains processes and systems students are required to follow and teaches you how to write academically".
Two free programs are offered as part of MBA START. The Federal Government funds a Preparation Program, concentrating on core academic skills. The Faculty of Business then offers a scholarship (worth $2000) for the first Graduate Certificate of Management unit. This unit is embedded in the Preparation Program, so that your new skills are practised within the framework of an actual unit.
