About the Vista 4 upgrade project

The UTAS learning management system software, WebCT Vista, will be upgraded at the end of Semester 2 this year. This software upgrade, in addition to the recent hardware upgrade, will ensure that UTAS students and staff continue to have access to an up-to-date online learning environment.

What will the upgrade involve?

  1. Vista software upgrade The Vista software will be upgraded from the current Vista 3.7 to Vista 4.2. This upgrade will include an easy-to-navigate interface, new functionality and new teaching and learning tools.

  2. Course migration
Current Vista courses will be migrated to the new system and tested.

  3. Downtime - November 21 > 25 2007 (Wednesday to Sunday)
The software upgrade, migration of courses and testing will require five days downtime for Vista. This downtime will be at the end of Semester 2 exams in November 2007.

  4. Rebuilding old WebCT Campus Edition courses
There are still around 50 Semester 1 courses in Vista that have content that was migrated from WebCT Campus Edition in 2005. To avoid any risk of corruption by migrating this old content a second time, CALT will work with teaching staff to rebuild these courses in Vista 4.2. Ccoordinators of these units will be contacted to discuss a timeline for rebuilding.

  5. Rebranding the learning management system
We have taken this opportunity to give the UTAS learning management system a new name as there has been quite a bit of confusion between Vista (the learning management system) and Vista (the Microsoft operating system).
Another reason for rebranding is that the WebCT company has now merged with Blackboard and the product name has changed to Blackboard Learning System Vista Enterprise License.

Rather than continually changing the name, the UTAS community has been involved in suggesting a name for our online learning environment that can be used regardless of any future changes to the product.

The competition to rename Vista has now closed. UTAS staff member Marcus Eddy submitted the winning entry which is MyLO (My Learning Online).

  6. Update resources
Vista self-help guides and modules will be updated to reflect the changes in Vista 4.2.

  7. Access to Vista 4.2 and information sessions

From mid October, Vista 4.2 ‘sandpit’ courses will be available to interested staff and a program of information sessions will be advertised.

All Teaching Online Essentials programs for new staff, held after the end of Semester 2, will be provided in Vista 4.2.
