Routine Cleaning

Certain types of cleaning on campus may be undertaken on a daily, alternate-day, twice weekly, weekly, monthly, quarterly, biannual, annual or periodical basis. The services provided vary from building to building across the campuses, and include the following:

Daily cleaning

  • cleaning staff rooms and common rooms
  • cleaning toilets and showers
  • cleaning canteens, food preparation areas and kitchens
  • cleaning floors in bathrooms, kitchens and staff common rooms
  • waste removal in kitchens, bathrooms and common rooms

Alternate-day cleaning (Mon, Wed, Fri week 1; Tue, Thur week 2)

  • cleaning lecture theatres, tutorial rooms, workshops and libraries
  • cleaning floors in communal areas and offices
  • cleaning lifts, furniture, equipment, fittings and fixtures
  • emptying waste bins in offices, lecture theatres, tutorial rooms, workshops and libraries
  • spot cleaning
  • removing graffiti

Twice weekly cleaning

  • dusting handrails and ledges
  • cleaning tables, desks and benches if cleared and other flat topped furniture

Weekly cleaning

  • cleaning skirting boards
  • dusting ledges
  • removing cobwebs
  • cleaning fire stairs
  • damp wipe handrails
  • polishing conference room tables
  • vacuum all carpeted floors
  • buffing of floors

Monthly cleaning

  • cleaning wall and door vents
  • cleaning foyer glass
  • dusting ceiling air conditioning vents
  • dusting blinds

Quarterly cleaning

  • All telephones are cleaned on a quarterly basis.

Biannual cleaning

Biannual cleaning is performed within the semester breaks. Some of the duties undertaken may replace daily or weekly activities. The biannual duties include:

  • wash and disinfect waste paper bins
  • clean window sills
  • clean washable walls
  • wash, scrub and chalk all chalk boards
  • remove and clean mats from mat wells

Annual cleaning

Annual cleaning is performed in the long semester break. Again, some of the duties undertaken during this period may replace other duties. Cleaning performed annually includes:

  • clean all ceiling vents
  • clean venetian blinds
  • thoroughly clean carpets
  • clean internal and external windows and internal glass partitions

Periodic cleaning

Periodic cleaning includes all cleaning performed with no fixed frequency. Periodic cleaning is normally performed during the long semester break mid November and mid February and includes:

  • vacuum chairs with cloth upholstery
  • cleaning lamp and light fittings
  • strip and re-seal resilient floor surfaces
  • carpet and window cleaning
