Peer assessment: Learning how to work in a team - Home

Overview

Nicole Clark teaches a third year unit called Software Engineering Project. Students enrolled in this unit work in teams of four or five to produce a major piece of computer software for a 'real life' industry client. A large component of students' final grades is based on self and peer assessment.

By evaluating themselves and their peers using self and peer evaluations, students in this unit gain a deep understanding of what is involved in being an effective member of a team.

Major Case Themes

  • Peer & self assessment
  • Learner-centred teaching

'Through self and peer assessment, the students get to see how they've rated themselves and how they themselves rate. The theory is that these scores will get closer together-they will be able to evaluate themselves, which is what we're after.'
