Developing students' theatre research skills in a performing arts program

Overview

Peter Hammond is Head of the Theatre Program and Director of Theatre for community groups and Centre Stage, the on-campus University-based theatre company. Peter believes that the development of research skills in undergraduate students is an essential part of the Theatre program at the Inveresk Academy of Visual and Performing Arts.

Student research can take many forms-researching a playwright; investigating the history of a drama text. Theatre research may even involve conducting interviews in the community in preparation for a performance focusing on a particular social issue. 'Their [students'] attitude to research from year one through to year three is quite an interesting journey ....by third year, their sense of enquiry is quite profound..'

Major Case Themes
