Offered by the Centre for University Pathways and Partnerships (CUPP), the Bachelor of General Studies Foundation Year is a pathway qualification for students wishing to study in the Faculty of Arts, Education, Business, Health Science or the Faculty of Science, Engineering & Technology.
In the first semester of study students take foundation level units specifically designed to ensure they have the skills critical to success at UTAS. In the second semester students take a combination of foundation and Introductory level units offered by the relevant Faculty.
Students successful in the Bachelor of General Studies (Arts Pathway) will automatically qualify for enrolment into a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Social Science or a Bachelor of Social Science (Police Studies) Conventional Pathway within the Faculty of Arts, with credit.

Students who successfully complete the Bachelor of General Studies (ICT Pathway) will be able to apply for a Bachelor of Information and Communication Technology with credit.

The Bachelor of General Studies pathways are designed for applicants who do not meet entry requirements for their chosen Degree or for those who want a more supported or graded introduction to their studies. This may include mature-aged students returning to study, some VET graduates or students with a low ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank) score from their year 11/12 studies. Students unsure of their eligibility to an undergraduate Degree should submit an application to the Bachelor Degree course of their preference in the first instance.

Second semester of study: Offered via the Centre for University Pathways and Partnerships & the relevant Faculty

Students should allow approximately 10 hours of focused study per unit per week of semester.
Commonwealth supported university places are available to Australian and New Zealand citizens for all units of the Diploma. In addition, a HECS scholarship is provided by UTAS to Australian and New Zealand citizens for all Foundation level units (i.e. these units are free of charge for eligible students). Fees apply for Introductory (first year) level units.
Eligible Australian citizens are able to defer their HECS fees through the HECS-HELP system however NZ citizens will be required to pay these HECS fees upfront.
