PASS stands for peer assisted study sessions: study groups offered in specific units that help you achieve your academic goals in a student friendly environment.
It’s not another lecture or tutorial: it’s group discussion with activities facilitated by students who have recently achieved excellent results in the unit.
It’s a casual and relaxed atmosphere. You will meet many other students who are studying the same unit.
“I like PASS because it will give you a place where you meet new people and make new friends.”
“The structures and environments are totally different to that of a lecture or tute and it’s a really good social learning environment.”
It’s not just an informal get together—it’s part of a program run and supported by the university. PASS sessions are specific to a particular unit. The people you are studying with are in the same position as you.
Leaders are trained to make sure that you get the most out of each session. Sessions review lecture content and develop study skills specific to your unit.
Being involved with PASS not only helps you to study but also helps you learn how to study. We’ll show you how to connect what to learn with how to learn. You’ll also get to communicate and share ideas productively in a group environment.
“PASS has been really great for me because it has helped me to network with a bunch of people I probably wouldn’t have had the chance to meet before.”
“You can come at a set and organised time. There is work already prepared and ready to go to do it in a group scenario with other people who are in the exact same situation as you are.”
PASS is for all students, whether your goal is to pass the course or earn a high distinction. It’s effective, on average, students who attend PASS regularly earn higher marks than those who don’t.
You drive your involvement. Simply turn up to a session at your convenience. It’s free and sessions are timetabled to fit in with your lecture and tutorials.
“It is a good way of finding more creative ways to do your study rather than just reading and taking notes: you learn lots of other ways to get it into your head and the information sticks a lot better.”
“It gives me the motivation to freely talk in class”.
“It’s given me somewhere to have a social aspect to university rather than everything being academic.”
PASS sessions are offered every week of semester for a wide range of units.
Turn up. Study with your peers. Achieve better results.
