Onboard Bluefin, one of the AMC training vessels.
“Over the course of their degree AMC Engineering Students spend various trips at sea on the fisheries training vessel Bluefin. This gives students firsthand experience of just what life at sea can be like.”
Footage of the rough ocean from onboard the Bluefin with muffled talking and music in the background.
“How are you guys feeling?”
“I’m feeling sweet but I don’t know about this guy though” – shows a student on the ground feeling sick.
“How are you doing Jonny? Not feeling too good?”
“We’re going down to the cabins. Don’t want to bash our head on the roof.”
“This is my home away from home for the week” – camera shows the cabin.
Footage from on deck. It’s raining and water is washing onboard.
“I’m making a craypot. Just tying on the mesh. You have to pull it really tight – that’s why we’ve got it tied up over here, and twisting it with our feet to keep the tension. And they come out like that one over there when you’re done. And then we end up with crays – hopefully”
“Late one night a bird was found wondering the half deck. He was sea sick and couldn’t take off. We christened him Nigel and Chuck tried to remind him how to fly.” Chuck flaps his arms.
Students disembark the ship on to a small boat and head to an island.
“On this particular trip, students put ashore on Babel Island and hiked to the top of one of the small mountains to enjoy the view. Following their intrepid leader Giles Thomas.”
Footage of the student’s trip to the island, up the mountain and the beautiful views.
“Hey Giles – I don’t like you”. – Laughter.
Back on the ship.
“Manoeuvring tests were undertaken in groups, including turning circle, zigzag and spiral manoeuvres and speed trials. These tests are carried out to analyse vessel performance and responsiveness.”
Footage of a wave crashing on the deck.
Trawling nets are cast out of the ship.
“Two trawls were undertaken on this voyage, one at thirty metres and the other at seventy. Both brought up many different species including sting rays, flathead, sharks and spider crabs. This showed students some of the hazards of a working stern deck.”
Footage of the ‘catch’ of seafood. “Look I’m holding a fish!”
Footage of dolphins swimming and jumping alongside the ship.
