CHEMISTRY IN THE BACHELOR OF SCIENCE
Chemistry - The Central Science
Almost every item in our modern world has involved a chemist at some stage
of its production: in the development of the pens with which we write, the petrol
that powers the cars we drive or the million and one household items, from detergents
to glue which we use every day. Consequently, chemistry is a science central
to many of the more rapidly evolving areas of technology.
Modern chemical laboratories often have sophisticated electronic equipment
linked to computers. Such laboratories require highly skilled personnel for
their operation and for interpretation of results. These people are today's
chemistry graduates. Such a professionally accredited chemistry major is available
at UTAS.
Chemistry Major in the BSc
The BSc with a chemistry major is offered in Hobart; the first year may also
be taken in Launceston (but in a limited range of disciplines). This major (normally
three years) provides a sound theoretical basis in chemistry which is enriched
by reference to relevant industrial and biological applications. An additional
year of study may be taken that leads to a BSc(Honours) degree.
