Aims of the workshops and prize for teachers
- To support secondary level teaching efforts that will contribute to the understanding and advancement of Tasmanian Antarctic and marine science
- To create awareness among teachers and students of Tasmania's reputation as an international centre for Antarctic and temperate marine education and research.
- To expand Antarctic and marine science literacy in schools by fostering working partnerships between mathematics and science educators and scientists at UTAS and CSIRO.
- To expose teachers to recent scientific developments and give teachers and students an insight into what it means to work as a scientist and the application of Antarctic and marine science in society.
- To produce learning sequences that demonstrate the role of mathematics and physics to the study of Antarctic and Marine Science and make these available to all schools in Tasmania.

Oceans, Coasts and Ice professional development workshops 2008 and the Antarctic and Marine Science Prize for Teachers 2008 are joint initiatives of the Centre for Marine Science, UTAS, Antarctic Tasmania, Department of Economic Development and the Department of Education, Tasmania. We have also received support from the Marine Discovery Centre, Woodbridge and Hadley's Hotel, Hobart Tasmania.
