Application Deadline: Thursday, 15 February 2007
The University Centre in Svalbard is hosting the International Sea-Ice Summer School on 2-13 July 2007. Aimed primarily at PhD and MS students in geophysics, biology, chemistry, or other disciplines related to sea ice, the school will provide a platform for interdisciplinary exchange between students, postdocs, and senior scientists. The school is part of an outreach program of the International Polar Year and is held in association with the University of the Arctic.
The program of the school consists of lectures by senior scientists in a wide variety of fields, computer exercises, and poster sessions. Topics for lectures include ice-air-sea interaction in polar regions, biogeochemistry of sea ice, sea ice dynamics, analytical and numerical sea ice models, remote sensing, and the future of sea ice, among others.
Students interested in attending the summer school must submit an application form and letter of recommendation from a senior scientist by Thursday, 15 February 2007, to registration@seaice.info. Further application information is available online at:
http://www.seaice.info
Applicants will be notified in early March 2007 of the success of their application.

In late spring 2006, Professor Mats Gyllenberg will give a course on modelling and the dynamics of general physiologically structured populations. The course starts with an account of the basic principles of modelling structured populations and will in the end bring the audience to the research frontier of the field of mathematical population theory. Topics include existence and uniqueness of solutions, steady-state analysis, stability and bifurcation theory, and adaptive dynamics.
Prerequisites for the course are a solid background in undergraduate mathematics (analysis, linear algebra, probability) and a genuine interest in biology.

Mathematical methods are becoming an increasingly important part of physical oceanography. This summer school aims to provide graduate students with an exciting survey of recent developments in this area. There is no registration fee. Those accepted for the summer school will have free lodging with full board. However, travel costs cannot be reimbursed. |

The summer school "Towards ecosystem oceanography: Identification and modelling of controls in marine ecosystems" will take place in Dragerup, Denmark, 18-28 June 2006. It is co-organised by the Ecosystem Approach to Marine Resources (WP6) group within the EUR-OCEANS Network of Excellence, and SLIP/Fishnet. It is endorsed and sponsored by GLOBEC. Registration is open from 9 February to 9 April 2006. Cf. http://www.eur-oceans.org/eamr/school/ and the attached documents for details.

The University of Sydney Institute of Marine Science is offering students an opportunity to join a research cruise from New Caledonia to Sydney aboard the French research vessel the Marion Dufresne. The cruise is planned for 10th to 25th February 2006 (subject to change without notice due to changes in the Marion Dufresne's schedule).
The aim of the "University of the Sea" Research Cruise is to enable senior researchers from the region to work with young local scholars on marine issues of direct interest to the Australasian and Indo-Pacific region. Students will address specific regional problems (including those unique to tropical and sub-tropical countries) through a program of targeted research. |
