Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma of Marine Sciences

How to apply for admission to a QMS Unit

To enrol in one of the QMS units you first need to enrol in one of two courses; Graduate Certificate Marine Sciences (S5M) or Graduate Diploma Marine Sciences (S6M).

Graduate Certificate in Marine Sciences (S5M)

Prerequisites : An undergraduate degree in a related science discipline with a major (or the equivalent thereof) directly related to the marine environment or suitable background in maths, physics, biology and/or chemistry.

The Graduate Certificate is offered on a part-time basis as units are only offered in semester 3 (summer) and 4 (winter) on an 18 month cycle. The minimum completion for the course is 1 year part - time and the maximum is 2 years from first enrolment.

Graduate Diploma in Marine Sciences (S6M)

Prerequisites : An undergraduate degree in a related science discipline with a major (or the equivalent thereof) directly related to the marine environment or suitable background in maths, physics, biology and/or chemistry.

The Graduate Diploma is offered on a part-time basis as units are only offered in semester 3 (summer) and 4 (winter) on an 18 month cycle. The minimum completion for the course is 2 year part - time and the maximum is 4 years from first enrolment.

Your application will be processed and if approved you will receive an enrolment form in the mail. When you receive this form you can then select the unit(s) you wish to enrol in, get the appropriate signatures and return the completed form to the University of Tasmania Student Centre .

When you receive your enrolment form you will be offered either a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) or a fee paying place.

The fee structure for each unit is as follows:

Tuition fee (domestic) $1281.00 (Fee paying place)
Student contribution (HECS) $ 725.00 (Commonwealth Supported Place)

If you are offered a CSP, you may elect to pay the student contribution upfront or if eligible, apply to have the fees deferred. You will receive an application form and guide to apply to defer payment when you receive your enrolment form.

 

What if I am a UTAS PhD Candidate?

PhD Candidates at UTAS wishing to take a QMS unit as part of their RHD program should contact the Graduate Research Unit to get advice on enrolment procedures.

What if I am a UTAS employee?

If you are an employee of the University of Tasmania you may be eligible to apply for student contribution support for each unit as part of a UTAS staff development initiative. Under this scheme University of Tasmania staff may apply for Student Contribution Support for UTAS award units in 2006. It is offered for up to two 12.5% units of study or a 25% unit in a semester over the full calendar year. The form can be downloaded from the following website:
