CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research (CMAR)

CMAR is an equal partner in the QMS PhD Program. As a QMS PhD student you are entitled to access the facilities at CMAR. CMAR requires all PhD Candidates to undertake an induction before you will be given access to the CMAR facilities. However, before the induction can take place CSIRO supervisors must complete the Engage Student form and get this apporved by their Research Group Leader.

Approval to Engage Student

For CSIRO supervisors to engage a PhD student they must do the following:

  • Complete the Engage Student form and send to your Research Group Leader for approval;
  • Once approved, the Research Group Leader needs to return all paperwork to supervisor (email or hard copy);
  • The supervisor needs to send all paperwork to Recruitment Services, who will put together a new contract and send this to the student.

For more information, please contact Pam Powell (CSIRO Recruitment Services Team - CSIRO Marine & Atmospheric Research). Tel. 03 6232 5216

CSIRO Induction Process

Your CSIRO Supervisor is responsible for providing you with an induction program. You and your CSIRO supervisor will need to complete a Student Approval and Risk Management Form for CSIRO co-supervised PhD and Masters Students. Your CSIRO supervisor can provide you with a copy of this form. Once completed, your CSIRO supervisor will submit the form to Pam Reid who will pass it onto the CSIRO P&C Service Centre. The CSIRO Service Centre will contact your supervisor to request he/she conduct your induction to CSIRO and to also confirm you have commenced your candidature. Once your induction has been completed and your supervisor has confirmed your commencement, the CSIRO Service Centre will generate a CSIRO ident for you. You will then have access to CMAR facilities for the remainder of your candidature. The Service Centre will not release the ident without the completion of the above process.

Your supervisor can provide you with general information regarding the induction process should you have any queries. It is the responsibility of your CSIRO supervisor to ensure the induction process is completed.

Office Space at CMAR

Candidates may spend part or all of their candidature based at the CMAR Laboratories in Castray Esplanade, Hobart. Due to limited space and some major refurbishment during 2008 there is no guarantee that CMAR will be able to provide office space for all QMS PhD Candidates. Requests for office space at CMAR should be directed to the Site Services group via the maintenance helpdesk.
