Information for QMS PhD Candidates and Supervisors

Intellectual Property (IP) and Authorship of Publications

The standard UTas Intellectual Property Policy applies to QMS PhD Candidates. If Intellectual Property issues arise from your PhD project you should be notified at the time of your enrolment. At this time you may be required to assign your intellectual property rights to the University of Tasmania (see section 3.1.2-5 of the University's Intellectual Property Policy).

The question of authorship should be discussed at the earliest possible stage in a research project, and reviewed whenever there are changes in participation. Candidates are encouraged to publish their research findings, if appropriate, throughout their candidature. The Board of Graduate Research strongly advises candidates, in consultation with their supervisors, to prepare a statement of authorship at the time each paper is submitted for publication. This should provide the details of the contribution of the candidate, the proportionate authorship of the co-authors and, where practical, should be endorsed by the co-authors. These statements should be kept on file in your school. If co-authored papers are to be included in the thesis, these statements will be needed to verify authorship.

Candidates who are affiliated with the ACE CRC and IASOS are required to sign a Deed of Assignment as a precondition of their candidature. This deed assigns all the candidate's project IP apart from copyright in the candidate's thesis to the University on behalf of the ACE CRC.

Guidelines on authorship can be found on pages 37-38 of the Graduate Research Resource Book http://www.research.utas.edu.au/gr/docs/resource_book.pdf
