QMS Coursework |

| |
The coursework component of the QMS PhD program aims to expand the knowledge base of students and enhance their research experience. The program consists of six units: an introductory unit, four compulsory core units and an elective unit. Most units are taught intensively over 5 days and include lectures and laboratory classes. Coursework should be completed in the first two years of the PhD program, constituting a maximum of one-third of the PhD program. Units are run either in summer school (February) or winter school (June-July).
You must complete six units, consisting of 5 core units and 1 elective, to qualify for graduation. You may attend more than one elective unit if desired. You are expected to actively participate in all aspects of each unit regardless of whether the unit material is directly related to your research interests or project.
QMS Unit Information.
Courses are typically offered on an 18 months cycle. The program of courses is provided on the QMS website http://www.utas.edu.au/cms/qms/about/course_program.html and updated annually. The program is provided in advance to facilitate planning of your field work and other events such as attendance at conferences. You must consider the timing of coursework when planning your program of research.
You must inform the QMS Steering Committee if your research involves fieldwork that will take you away from Hobart for extended periods in February and/or June/July or laboratory based experiments that cannot be rescheduled. You will need to submit a plan, developed in consultation with your supervisors, demonstrating to the QMS Steering Committee how you will complete the required QMS units within the period of your candidature.
