Graduate research at the University of Tasmania is overseen and coordinated at a University-wide level by the (Acting) Pro Vice-Chancellor of Research, Professor Allan Canty. The PVC (Research) works in collaboration with members of the Graduate Research Board, the Dean of Graduate Research, Professor Carey Denholm and staff of the Graduate Research Unit. Candidates may arrange to meet with the Dean of Graduate Research to discuss problems with their candidature, if they have been unable to resolve such problems with their School or with the Director of the QMS PhD Program. The role of the Dean of Graduate Research is as follows:

  • to work with the Faculties to make sure that appropriate strategies are in place to recruit postgraduate research students
  • to work with the Faculties and the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) to make sure that the University's postgraduate research training programs have a high profile internally, within Tasmania , interstate and overseas
  • to work with the Faculties, supervisors and student groups to make sure that appropriate levels of pastoral care are provided
  • to make sure that the University maintains appropriate standards in relation to candidature matters (including admission, appropriate infrastructure, supervision and examination)
  • to make sure that high standards of supervision are maintained, including training of supervisors
  • to provide advice to Academic Senate, and the Chair of Academic Senate, on relevant academic matters
  • to work with the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) on broad strategic policy and resource issues
  • to oversee the process for the allocation of scholarships awarded centrally (extract from University of Tasmania Ordinance No. 70, Graduate Research, Section 6.1)

The Board of Graduate Studies and the Graduate Research Unit offer induction sessions and you are encouraged to attend one of these early in your candidature in order to learn about the services on campus and have the chance to meet with candidates from other schools and disciplines as well as relevant postgraduate administrative staff.

Graduate research is a collaborative project and the quality of the research experience and quality of the thesis and research outcomes are influenced by the research practices of the candidate, supervisors and program leaders. The QMS PhD Program endeavours to provide candidates with a high level of personal support and care and to provide a stimulating and intellectually rich research environment. Our team of UTAS and CMAR supervisors are committed to providing effective, expert and empathetic supervision, supported by the QMS Graduate Research Coordinator, Professor Richard Coleman. Individual candidates can contribute significantly to their research experience by building good working relationships with their supervisory team and through their own enthusiastic and effective self-management and communication with supervisors and peers. The QMS PhD Program, UTAS and CMAR will provide candidates with a high quality research environment and opportunities for additional training throughout a student's candidature. You are encouraged to view your candidature as a partnership between yourself, your supervisors, UTAS and CMAR.
