UTAS
There are a number of University policies in relation to field work and travel that may have insurance implications. General information about insurance issues and policies at UTAS can be viewed at http://www.utas.edu.au/docs/fin_services/insurance/index.html
Postgraduate Student Travel
The University of Tasmania covers Postgraduates whilst on authorised University travel interstate or overseas for up to a maximum period of 180 days. The policy does not cover travel within Tasmania unless that forms part of a journey to mainland Australia and overseas.
Combined business and private travel
The University will only cover private travel that is incidental to the business trip. Where the trip is extended to include annual leave, it is the responsibility of the individual concerned to arrange insurance cover for this component of the trip.
The policy can be viewed at http://www.utas.edu.au/docs/fin_services/insurance/phdstudents.html
If private travel exceeds the guidelines of this policy the principal purpose of the travel will not be considered to relate solely to University business, and 50% of the airfares will be considered to be private. In this case, it is University policy that the employee pays for 50% of the airfare.
Private travel will only be considered to be incidental to University business travel where the business travel is at least equal to the private travel. In addition, the following guidelines must be met:
| Business Days Away |
Private Days Off |
| 1 - 30 days |
up to 3 days prior to, and 3 days post the business days |
| 31 - 60 days |
up to 7 days (total private days in the period away) |
| 61 - 90 days |
up to 14 days (total private days in the period away) |
| 91 + days |
up to 21 days (total private days in the period away) |
Where private travel is not considered to be incidental, it is University policy that the employee should pay for 50% of the airfare.
This policy can be viewed at http://www.utas.edu.au/docs/fin_services/policies/policy_11-9_2.html
