Population dynamics, assessment, and interspecific relationships of Tasmanian rock lobsters

Supervisors: Malcolm Haddon (TAFI), Leon Barmuta (UTAS) and Keith Sainsbury (CSIRO)

Summary of research project:
The proposed research involves utilising the existing information on crustacean fisheries to devise a suitable range of assessment models that will adequately represent the dynamics of the Tasmanian rock lobster population, aspects of the associated marine ecosystem, and the fishing impacts. Establishing an assessment model that considers the interspecific interactions that occur between rock lobster and other species and also the uncertainty surrounding population parameters, can help highlight the advantages and disadvantages of single-species, multi-species and ecosystem modelling approaches. Insight into establishing assessment models and robust harvest strategies that account for the impacts of fishing on crustacean populations can also be gained.
