Role of oceanographic variables in the biology and ecology of Shy Albatross
Supervisors: Dr Alistair Hobday (UTAS), Dr Rosemary Gales (DPWI) and Dr Geoff Tuck (CMAR)
The Shy Albatross (Thalassarche cauta) is endemic to Australia - breeding exclusively on three islands off the Tasmanian coast, Albatross Island in the north west and Pedra Branca and Mewstone in the south. In each region, it apears to utilize a different oceanographic region. Oceanographic variation plays a major role in the foraging distribution, abundance and life history of the Shy Albatross. In this Ph.D I will explore relationships between population trends, foraging ecology and breeding biology of the Shy Albatross and their environment. These areas are fundamental to understanding the habitat preferences and natural history of this top mairne predator and have direct management and conservation consequences.
