Interaction between Rock Lobsters and Abalone

My current research focuses on understanding the ecosystem effects of fishing, particularly in relation to extraction of key reef species that have the potential to alter ecosystem function. Both rock lobster and abalone fisheries are considered to be relatively benign with respect to the physical effects of fishing and by-catch species (both retained and non-retained). However, since the declaration of the Maria Island Marine Protected Area (MPA) over a decade ago significant interactions between rock lobsters and abalone have become evident. Results from monitoring the Maria Island MPA suggest that rock lobsters can structure abalone populations and the current productivity of abalone stocks on the east coast may be due to relatively low predation pressure from depressed rock lobster stocks.

My research aims at evaluating the strength and nature of the interaction between rock lobsters and abalone. Over the next two years a series of experiments are planned to understand how the two fisheries can be co-managed to maximise productivity while ensuring sustainability and protecting important ecosystem functions. This work is part of a large research program being undertaken by TAFI researchers examining multi-species management of Tasmania 's inshore reef fisheries and funded by the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC).
