Career Summary

Dr Mike Baker is a senior research fellow at CODES. He received his BSc (Hons) from the University of Sydney in 2003, and PhD from the University of Tasmania in 2007 under the supervision of Professor Tony Crawford. In 2007 Mike worked for the Northern Territory Geological Survey as a project geologist. In 2008 he returned to CODES to commence a postdoctoral research position as part of the AMIRA International project P765A Geochemical and geological halos in green rocks and lithocaps led by Professor David Cooke and Professor Bruce Gemmell. This project concluded in December 2010.

Mike is currently the Senior Research Fellow on the follow-up project to AMIRA P765A: AMIRA International project P1060 Enhanced geochemical targeting in magmatic-hydrothermal systems. This project is due to continue at CODES until mid-2014.

Mike received the Earth Resource Foundation-CMTE Scholarship in Geophysics, the Deas-Thomson Scholarship in Mineralogy and the Quodling Testimonial Fund for Crystallography and Petrology in Geology from the University of Sydney in 2002, and was a member of the AMIRA P765A and P1060 research teams that received the AMIRA International Award for Research Excellence in 2012.

Research Activity

Mike's research interests are in studying the evolution of igneous and volcanic rocks, involving the application of scientific methods for determining the age, geochemistry, petrology, and petrogenesis of igneous systems. This includes the origin of igneous rocks and volcanic systems, metamorphism and deformation, as well as the use of analytical techniques for determining the timing of emplacement, mineral and wholerock geochemistry, and regional setting. More recently, he has focused on the development of geochemical exploration techniques for porphyry and epithermal deposits in propylitic-altered terranes.
