Thank you to all UTAS students and staff who completed the UTAS travel survey in March.
Congratulations to UTAS student and staff member Jacynta O'Rourke who won the $250 Kathmandu voucher prize draw.
A total of 3,938 people responded to the survey: 3107 students and 831 staff. While responses were greatest for the Sandy Bay and Newnham campuses, it was the Medical Sciences Precinct in the Hobart CBD that had the highest response rate of all UTAS sites based on the number of staff and students located there.
The survey project was supervised by Dr Anna Lyth and undertaken by Aaron Archer as part of his Master of Environmental Planning research requirements. The project was made possible through the Academic Operations Sustainability Integration Program (AOSIP) which encourages projects that have value to the University's progression of sustainable practice and to research and education in the sustainability field.
The purpose of the UTAS travel survey was to establish baseline information about the travel behaviour and travel patterns of the University community across all campuses and facilities. The baseline data obtained from the survey will lead to the development of key performance indicators that guide the delivery of the UTAS Sustainable Transport Strategy 2012–2016 and facilitate future transport and facilities planning. The University’s Commercial Services and Development section is responsible for implementing initiatives under the UTAS Sustainable Transport Strategy.
“This survey is one of the most significant of its kind undertaken in Tasmania so will contribute greatly to our understandings of travel behaviour and demand in different parts of the state in which UTAS is present. This sort of information is essential for future transport planning for the University and the state,” said project supervisor Dr Anna Lyth from the School of Geography and Environmental Studies.
The project team is busy analysing the data collected. Keep an eye out for more news outlining some of the key findings from the survey. Read more information on the University’s sustainable transport strategy.
