Postgraduate Scholarships

You will want some finances if you are going to undertake a graduate research degree. The primary support for candidates enrolled in the PhD and MSc programs are the Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA) or the Tasmanian Research Scholarships (TRS). These scholarships are awarded solely on academic merit and there is considerable competition for them. They are only available to potential full-time students who are Australian citizens or have permanent resident status. The only difference between the two schemes is who funds them: APAs are funded by the Commonwealth Government and TRSs by the University of Tasmania. APAs and TRSs are tenable for three years for a PhD and for two years for an MSc degree, with the possibility of extensions to a maximum of three and a half years.

Casual Employment Opportunities

The School of Computing & Information Systems may also provide you the opportunity to undertake part-time tutoring within the School. This provides you with both additional financial support and useful training and experience.

Conference Attendance Costs and Consumables

The School provides you with assistance to help with travel to a conference and conference registration, generally once during your candidature and usually associated with delivering a paper. The School will also cover approved costs associated with your research program, which might include items such as photocopying, printing, computing access, and minor equipment.
