The Bachelor of Information and Communication Technology (BICT) aims to give students the opportunity to explore a broad range of aspects of information and communications technology (ICT), and to graduate them with knowledge and skills in a variety of key areas of ICT for a lifelong career. The degree offers units across the complete spectrum of ICT, ranging from non-technical areas such as the nature of information and organisational needs for ICT, through the hardware, software, network and creative technologies which are used to satisfy these needs, to the communication, design, development and management skills needed to create, implement and integrate ICT components. The degree produces ICT professionals who are confident and articulate team players, and who are attuned to the needs, methods and attitudes of business and society. The BICT aims to provide ICT graduates with the skills and knowledge to take on appropriate professional positions in industry upon graduation and grow into leadership positions, achieve entrepreneurial ambition, or pursue research and graduate studies in ICT.
A combined degree provides students with an opportunity to gain qualifications that will provide more breadth and offer wider opportunities for employment.
What degrees can be combined with a BICT?
In my role as a solution architect I take on a holistic view of software projects where I find myself working closely with the customer and the development team in developing enterprise-level solutions. I technical lead an onshore and offshore Russian development team where we embrace the agile/scrum methodologies. The parts of the job I enjoy most is the consulting aspect in driving customers towards their IT strategy and involvement in large enterprise-scale projects as I enjoy how there are many constituent parts that make up the whole.
On leaving UTAS, I found I was well equipped with the necessary skills to delve into customer engagements and consulting work. With my UTAS education, I took my education further where I’m currently studying a Master of Science (majoring in bioinformatics) at the University of Turku where I am currently researching genomic variations in next generation sequencing data.
